A Very Laos Christmas

My Christmas in Vientiane was not too dissimilar to what I might experience at home. There was food, wine, talking crap about religion, politics and hairstyles. There was even carol singing!
There was food and wine and then a lot of lying around feeling full

We made a valiant effort with the feast

The view was stunning

Skype replaced the "dropping by to eat Dad's pudding" visit

The weeks leading up to Christmas saw shops filled with Lao-style Santa suits, strings of lights, piles of tinsel and quite a few Christmas trees. And everything was red.

Last week there was cake

There was a bit of aimless Christmas Eve sitting around

Some Santas were rather small

This Santa smelt like fish sauce

Christmas trees, oh Christmas trees..

Head band things bounced around town

There was tinsel

It's always been a tinsel town but that has very little to do with Christmas

Anything red was promoted to front-of-house

And who can decide between a Santa suit or a kiddie-sized Beer Lao Tshirt?

  1. Looks like all had a good time. Somehow celebrating Christmas with Santa etc doesn't quite seem appropriate in Buddhist/Communist Laos. Just like Australia celebrating the birth of Mohammad.

    1. Bah! Christmas is about giving crappy presents isn't it? And there is always a santa no matter what the religion (well, in Asia, as far as I know...).
